This position is for a senior mechanical engineer to perform research, design, qualification and analysis of mechanical systems for military environments, with a focus on aerospace applications. Qualified candidate should be familiar with developing structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite and bonded structures for mechanical, armament, aircraft, and avionics equipment. While the primary focus of this position is to perform dynamic and static structural analysis of mechanical structures, the qualified candidate may also be responsible for performing thermal stress analysis, transient thermal analysis, dynamic testing, and climatic testing. 

Analyses will cover a wide range of difficult problems, requiring solutions that are imaginative, thorough and practical. Analysis will be of complex component and assembly structures using classical and/or advanced methods of analysis to articulate risk for internal and external customers based on data driven models. Results will drive product design, materials selection and planning decisions around risk reduction and/or characterization testing. 

Working independently and in the context of teams, the selected candidate will be responsible for the technical compliance of analysis work products, and will act as an advisor to management and customers on critical design decisions. The candidate will be expected to effectively present their work in program and department reviews and to provide expert counseling and mentoring to other team members. 

Analysis tasks will typically involve hardware designs for static and dynamic strength, stiffness, fatigue and fracture mechanics as well as linear and non-linear thermo-elastic behavior. Analysis support will be provided through all phases of the program life-cycle, including proposal, concept architecture, requirements derivation, design, integration/testing, and the occasional failure analysis or anomaly resolution. 

Dynamic and climatic testing will be in accordance with MIL-STD-810 and involve the managing and running of environmental test to cover such things as temperature, vibration, and shock for the purpose of correlating the test results to the analysis in pursuit of qualifying the product. The candidate will be expected to design test setups, interface with technicians, and support the completion of test reports to satisfy customer and program requirements. 

The successful candidate should be able to support multiple projects, in a fast-paced, team environment. The candidate will demonstrate an ability to solve complex problems that require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity, and provide examples of guiding the successful design of major mechanical assemblies. Candidate may be required to obtain a U.S. Secret Security Clearance at a later date, U.S. Citizenship required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to communicate to all levels of the organization and to external customers
• Technical leadership capabilities, including the ability to lead the resolution of tough technical challenges
• Team leadership capabilities: able to direct a team of structural engineers in design, analysis, and testing of aerospace structures
• 10+ years of professional experience in structural and thermal analysis
• Knowledge of government, industry and/or academic practices and standards related to structural analysis, finite element analysis, and structural verification testing
• Technical proficiency in ruggedized product design with design compliance to applicable standards
• Development of critical load cases - balancing mechanical loads and thermal loads
• Structural testing, planning, organization, execution, data reduction and correlation
• Demonstrated ability to perform Structural Finite Element Analysis using ANSYS, ABAQUS, or equivalent software
• Expertise performing hand calculations based on fundamental equations
• Ability to travel to government and other facilities in support of program activities
• Experience with common industry and military specifications and standards
• Ability to analyze mechanical design requirements, allocate to mechanical products, and trace to features in the product design
• Strong understanding of structural materials
• Ability to manage multiple, unrelated tasks in an organized manner
• Must be able to obtain a DoD Security Clearance Desired Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
• Prior experience in Defense or Aerospace
• Advanced technical degree
• Structural integrity analysis to assess static Margin of Safety as well as fatigue life (cumulative damage index)
• Design and/or analysis experience with thermal management in electronic assemblies
• Experience with NAVAIR 4.0 and/or SEEK EAGLE airworthiness processes needed to obtain flight clearance
• Ability to estimate level of effort on projects/tasks for cost and schedule
• Proficient using 3-D CAD Modeling Tools (CREO preferred)
• Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, (ASME Y14.5 standards)
• Experience generating engineering drawings, product structures (BOM), and reports
• Experience designing products utilizing casting, forging and extruded manufacturing processes
• Experience designing products utilizing injection-molded plastics and composite materials
• Experience designing to meet production cost targets (DFM; DTUPC).
• Experience supporting the development of an Engineering/Data Requirements Agreement Plan (EDRAP)

Required Education: Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering or related field and a minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience. Desired Education: Master's degree or PhD in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
