Lead Systems Design Engineer, Transformational Computing

The Systems Engineering, Integration, and Test (SEIT) group is seeking an experienced Lead Systems Engineer to perform front-end system design activities and product development. Reporting to the Systems Engineering Lead, the Systems Engineer will collaborate with research scientists and product teams to perform system architecture and design activities. As a member of the product development teams, the Systems Engineer will develop advanced computing research into product designs and architectures.  While the focus is on hardware/software systems, a cross-functional team will be needed that can apply aspects of microwave and analog electronics, digital hardware design, mechanical and thermal design, and environmental control.

The Lead Systems Design Engineer will:

  • Perform system architecture and design activities on systems or subsystems.
  • Work with customers, scientists, and engineers to elicit system level requirements.
  • Use model-based systems engineering approach for performing system architecture and design.
  • As part of a cross-functional systems team, mentor, and cross-train other team members.
  • Ensure system designs align to the system architecture.
  • Perform trade studies and concepts for new opportunities.
  • Create system verification and validation plans.
  • Perform simulation of system components using simulation software.
  • Working with the SEIT Lead, they will lead, establish, and enforce the adoption of standard processes, configuration management, and good engineering practices
  • Apply systems thinking and sound systems engineering practices in a R&D organization

This position will serve on-site in Linthicum, MD at our Advanced Technologies Laboratory.

Basic Qualifications for Sr. Principal Systems Design Engineer:

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) such as Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or a similar technical discipline with 14 years of related experience, or 12 years with a Master's Degree, or 9 years with a PhD.
  • Experience in Systems Architecture and Design or Product Development.
  • Development of systems documentation, processes, and test plans.
  • Elicitation of requirements from stakeholders and customers into executable specifications.
  • Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain US security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications for Sr. Principal Systems Design Engineer:

  • Experience leading cross functional teams.
  • Experience in custom hardware system design.
  • Knowledge or experience in microwave, high speed digital, or cryogenic test.
  • US citizenship required willing to submit for a DOD clearance
